No. of visits after transplant

  • 2 months Twice a week
  • 3rd month Once a week
  • 4 months - 1 year Twice a month
  • More than 1 year At least once in 3 months
  • A usual lab test monitors blood count, kidney function, electrolytes, and medication levels in the patient's blood.
  • Other tests may be ordered as necessary.

    Test for kidney function :

Creatinine and BUNtell how well the kidneys work by measuring levels of creatinine and blood urea nitrogen, waste products normally removed from the blood by the kidneys. This should be done weekly for first three months, then every fortnight for next 4-5 months; and if all is well, every month after that.

  • Drug levels measure Tacrolimus (Pangraf®/Prograf) or Cyclosporine (Sandimmune®)level in the blood. Tacrolimus or Cyclosporine blood levels must be checked regularly to avoid levels that are too high or too low. High levels could lead to toxicity or over-immunosuppression, and low levels may lead to rejection. NOTE: The desired level (normal range) will differ for each person, depending on the combination of immunosuppressive medications and the length of time since the transplant.

    Tests for liver function:

Serum Bilirubin level measures level of bilirubin (hemoglobin degradation product) in blood. It's increased level shows deranged liver function, called jaundice.

  • SGOT/AST is a measure of liver enzyme. It's increase in blood shows deranged liver function.
  • SGPT/ALT is another measure of liver enzyme. It's increase in blood also shows deranged liver function.
  • Alkaline Phosphatase is a measure of an enzyme, which is made in the bones, liver pancreas and intestines, and removed from the blood by the liver. It's increase in blood shows deranged liver function. HbsAg (Hepatitis B Virus Antigen) is a serum marker to diagnose viral infection of liver by Hepatitis B Virus.Lipid profile helps to monitor the fat level of your body, and tells about any future risk to your heart. The lipid profile includes Serum Cholesterol, Triglycerides, High density lipoproteins (HDL), Low density lipoproteins (LDL) and Very low density lipoproteins (VLDL).Blood Glucose Levelmust be checked regularly ,as it may increase as a side effect of prednisolone/cyclosporin/tacrolimus. You may need to take anti hyperglycemics ,ego Insulin ,to control your blood sugar.Random blood glucose level is taken any time of the day irrespective of the time of meals.Fasting (F) blood glucose level is taken empty stomach early morning.Post prandial (PP) blood glucose level is taken 2hours after taking meal, after giving the fasting glucose level.

    Mineral Levels :

  • WBC count tell if the patient's white blood cells have increased (usually a sign of infection) or decreased (indicating a lower defense against infection).
  • Haemoglobin (Hb) is the actual molecule in red blood cell that carries oxygen.
  • Platelet count measures platelet cells which form a blood clot when the body is injured. Low platelet levels may cause someone to bruise easily and to bleed for a longer time when injured.Monitoring Health and a New Kidney at Home .
  • Transplant Games

Sodium (Na+) helps maintain the level of salt and water in the body. Potassium (K +) is needed for normal heart and muscle functions.Calcium (Ca) is necessary for strong bones and teeth, blood clotting and heart and nerve function.Phosphate (P04) works closely with calcium to strengthen bones.
