Guide Lines to Follow :

  • Monitor your weight on a daily basis and eat a well-balanced diet with selections from all food groupsAvoid sugary snacks such as biscuits between meals. If you feel hungry, eat some fresh peeled fruit or cleanvegetables.
  • Do not eat cheese made from unpasteurised milk and avoid cheese with mouldTake 1,000 to 1,500 mg of calcium daily to keep your bones healthyAdditionally, regular exercise (30 minutes at least three times a week) will help control your weight.
  • Try to drink about three to four litres (9-12 glassse) of fluid every day. This is good for your kidney and helps remove waste products from your body. Always drink boiled or bottled water.
Following dietary instructions will help you achieve the above guidelines :
DO's :

1. Use lona salt instead of normal salt. (Potassiam needs to be monitored)
2. Drink lemon water (no salt and no sugar), butter milk (thin lassi without salt and sugar).
3. In case of oil one can use peanut oil, sunflower oil, corn oil, mustard oil, til oil.
4. It is advisable to use 4-5 tsp of cooking oil/day .
5. Eat whole dals like sabut chana dal, sabut moong dal, sabut masoor dal, rajma, lobia nutrinugget etc.
6. Use toned milk and prepare curd and paneer (cheese) from the toned milk. Milk and milk products contain good amount of calcium which is necessary to strengthen the bones which may get weaker by long term steroid intake.
7. Eat sprouts (put the sabut dal in muslin cloth and sprinkle water and keep it overnight, have it as a sprout chaat).
8. Eat chiwra, upma (add vegetable to it )Limit your sodium (salty foods) to help limit fluid retention, saturated fat (butter, ghee) and and cholesterol intake to control blood pressure and weight. A low-fat, low sugar diet will help control weight and blood sugar.12
9. Low sodium foods that can be taken when blood pressure persists: chiwra, onion, bottle gourd (ghia), karela, brinjal (baigan), beans, ladyfinger (bhindi), methi dana, anar, tomato, orange, amla, guava, papaya (papita).
